(Grand Falls-Windsor) The organization establishing Newfoundland and Labrador’s first community-based hospice is moving closer to opening its doors.
Lionel Kelland Hospice now has its Executive Director in place with the recruitment of Peggy Hamilton. Hamilton has an extensive background in accounting, progressive management and leadership within different industries and sectors. Having worked in the oil industry, federal airport authority, seafood processing, retail, hospitality, and government
companies, she also has experience in the not-for-profit sector. Her areas of expertise include accounting, IT, human resources, and strategic and operational planning. Hamilton holds designations of Certified Management Accountant and Chartered Professional Accountant.
As Executive Director for the first community-based hospice in Newfoundland and Labrador, Peggy Hamilton is the key senior leader and will manage all resources to enable the delivery of high-quality palliative care and supportive programs for families. She said, “Working with Lionel Kelland Hospice is an honour, and I look forward to building a team that is dedicated to compassionate and holistic care, education, and research.”
Board Chair, Mark Griffin, said that the organization is thrilled to have reached the stage of hiring its first Executive Director. “We carried out a robust search process and we are confident that Peggy will contribute greatly to ensuring that everything is in place for the Hospice to open later this year.”
Lionel Kelland Hospice will be the first of its kind for Newfoundland and Labrador. The former Presentation Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor is under construction to become a modern, fully-equipped, 2,430 square metre residence designed to meet the care needs of palliative patients and to support their families. The building features ten private resident suites and spaces that enable families to be together and supported as they journey with their loved ones during the last days and moments of life.

Peggy Hamilton was recently hired as the Executive Director for Lionel Kelland Hospice, the province’s first community-based residence for end-of-life care. Peggy has more than 30 years of accounting, progressive management and leadership experience in many different industries and sectors. Her history includes positions in the oil industry, federal airport authority, seafood processing, retail, hospitality, and government agencies. She most recently held the positions of Director of Operations and Director of Financial Operations for the social enterprise portion of a charitable organization in central Newfoundland. Her areas of expertise include accounting, administration, information technology, human resources, procurement, and strategic and operational planning.
Peggy hails from the province’s west coast and has lived in Grand Falls-Windsor for many years with her husband and two teenagers. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce Co-op degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and then her professional designations for Certified Management Accountant and later, the Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
A committed community volunteer, Peggy has served on many boards in Grand Falls-Windsor in various capacities over the years, as well as been engaged with many organizations including Girl Guides, minor baseball, and minor hockey. She enjoys gardening, spending time with her family and their golden retriever, as well as beachcombing. Working with the Board of Directors, Peggy is looking forward to facilitating the opening and operation of Lionel Kelland Hospice which will offer compassionate palliative care in a home-like environment.
