For Families

When someone is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, the people closest to them are affected, too.

Loved ones find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances and many struggle with the transition of the illness to death and through bereavement. In Canada, the statistics show that one death affects the lives of five others. In Newfoundland and Labrador, that number is much higher.

Lionel Kelland Hospice is a family-centred hospice, meaning we provide care and support for the family and loved ones of individuals dealing with terminal illness, too. Families and friends are welcome, even a beloved pet. In addition to quiet spaces, family rooms, and a fully equipped kitchen, we have four family suites, beautiful outdoor spaces for reflection, and a host of support programs to help families through the end-of-life process. All overseen by an interdisciplinary team who is here 24/7 for you and your loved one.

Our programs emphasize life and living by providing opportunities for residents and their families to experience all the joys and pleasures available to them in the time that they have remaining.

Palliative residents will receive mental health care as a crucial component of end-of-life care. We understand that strong mental health is important for every single person – from birth to death. Those with a life-limiting illness will experience feelings of fear, vulnerability, and depression, just as their loved ones do. That is why we offer comprehensive programs that incorporate education, anticipatory grief, bereavement support, and spiritual care. All programs are provided by professionals from multiple disciplines in comfortable surroundings and at no extra cost to families. Counselling will be offered in a safe, inclusive environment and people will receive the help needed to overcome crisis situations.
