Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – On Saturday, October 19 the Lionel Kelland Hospice hosted a special event to unveil a remarkable mural and showcase the donation of the “Kelland Collection,” gifted by the Central Newfoundland Visual Arts Society (CNVAS). The event celebrated the power of art to provide solace, beauty, and inspiration within the Hospice community.
The mural, a collaborative project led by local artist Robert Lodge, is the result of a generous donation from CNVAS. Titled “The Four Seasons,” the mural captures the beauty of the 4 seasons of life through a natural landscape lens. It was unveiled as part of a larger presentation celebrating the arts. This vibrant work of art, displayed in the Hospice’s Owen Young Community Outreach Room, symbolizes hope and connection for residents, families, staff, and visitors alike.
“Art has a profound ability to transform spaces, evoke emotion, and offer moments of peace during difficult times. This collaboration is a meaningful way to celebrate life, art, and our community,” said Robert Lodge, President of CNVAS. “Our artists are honored to contribute to a space that offers such vital support to families in our community.”
The “Kelland Collection” features a range of artwork donated by local artists who are members of CNVAS, reflecting the diverse and talented community of Central Newfoundland. This donation marks an important partnership between the Hospice and the arts community, with pieces carefully selected to bring comfort and tranquility to Hospice residents and their loved ones. The collection will be displayed throughout the Hospice, enhancing the serene environment.
The Corner Stone piece of the collection is a painting by renowned artists Walter Pinsent and Glenn Pinsent (1951-2015) titled “Peace.” Showcasing the story and history of two brothers and their love for the arts. Walter’s brother Glenn was diagnosed with lung cancer in the Fall of 2014. As his journey of life was ending, his family gathered at this home to say goodbye. Glenn took Walter to his art studio and presented him with the basic elements and compositions of this painting. He gave it to his brother as a gift, with instructions to complete it as he saw fit. With much reflection and celebration of his wonderful life, Walter finished the work in February 2015. It has been reproduced to be shared with the family and now with us at the Lionel Kelland Hospice.
“” Peace” is designated for the third floor for the viewing and pleasure of families and residents of the Hospice” says Walter. “We hope it will reduce the feeling of isolation and loneliness. Art has the power to inspire through creativity with no social barriers, language or age. It helps us cope in times of crisis and reduce stress. We are proud of your selection of the resting place of “Peace.” Hopefully spirits will be lifted.”
“We are incredibly grateful to CNVAS for their generosity and vision in creating a lasting legacy within our Hospice,” said Peggy Hamilton, Executive Director of Lionel Kelland Hospice. “The ‘Kelland Collection’ and the stunning mural not only beautify our space but also provide comfort and joy to those who spend time with us.”
The mural unveiling was accompanied by refreshments and an opportunity for attendees to engage with the artwork and artists involved. This event further emphasizes the importance of community involvement in the mission of the hospice to provide compassionate care.
