Under the direction of the Clinical Care Lead, in collaboration with the other members of the Hospice team, including volunteers, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for providing total end-of-life care to patients and their families, in accordance with the standards of practice as outlined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador. The expectations of this role include maintaining strict confidentiality of all resident information in accordance with the Personal Health Information Act (PHIA); conducting ongoing comprehensive nursing assessments on all residents while meeting their ever changing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs; engaging in a therapeutic relationship with all residents and families while delivering the best possible care experience. As required, the Licensed Practical Nurse will provide support to the Registered Nurse, Personal Care Assistants and Volunteers, as appropriate.
Key responsibilities include:
- Participate in the admission of new residents.
- Through consultation with the care team, the residents and family, assists with development, implementation and evaluation of resident care plans.
- Provides direct nursing and palliative care to residents according to the established care plan; ensuring that the emotional, spiritual and physical comfort needs, and safety of residents and their families are met to the greatest possible degree on an ongoing basis.
- Performs routine nursing duties in accordance with Hospice policies and procedures and Standards of Nursing Practice as defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Collaborates with all members of the leadership and health care teams to promote communication and compliance to policies, procedures and applicable legislation.
- Receives and transcribes physicians’ orders.
- Administers and records medication as prescribed and as per scope of practice.
- Maintains the standards of accurate and complete documentation and reporting of a resident’s ongoing status.
- Follows the appropriate process upon the death of a resident.
- Provides support to the Registered Nurse, Personal Care Attendants and Volunteers, as appropriate.
- Assumes other related duties as assigned by the Clinical Care Lead.
Our Ideal Candidate
- Current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador.
- Current Basic Life Support BLS certification and commitment to renewal.
- Recent palliative care experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in pain and symptom management.
- Knowledgeable about and committed to the hospice philosophy of care.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work with residents/family living with and dying from advanced illness.
- Strong resident-centered focus.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- A strong and clear understanding of ethics, especially related to hospice palliative care.
- Ability to give and take direction.
- Experience in wound care is considered an asset.
- Palliative Care education, i.e., LEAP and/or The Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care considered an asset.

- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to work both 12-hour day and night shifts.
- Demonstrated computer skills and experience with electronic information systems.

Hours of Work
12 hours shifts, day and night, including weekend and holidays.
Hourly Rate Range
$28 – $32 per hour, commensurate with experience and education.
