The Story of A Caring Community
In 2014, a group of health care professionals began exploring options to address the gap that existed in the central region for end-of-life care. The concept of having an independent facility that would offer compassionate palliative care in a home-like setting was well-received. In 2016, the Presentation Sisters donated St. Catherine’s Renewal Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor to be used as a residential hospice. The Centre has been completely reconstructed and transformed into a 10-bed hospice focusing on care, respect, and dignity for people who are dying and providing support for their loved ones.
Support for the Hospice has been incredible from the very beginning. Individuals, businesses, and community organizations have given so generously to ensure that the Hospice would be there to care for palliative residents and support their families. There is strong support from the provincial government in the provision of an annual operating grant, and through funding to assist with capital costs.
Lionel Kelland Hospice has opened its doors to the families who need it, finally delivering the quality care and compassionate services that people in our region truly deserve. The Hospice is named in honour of Dr. Lionel Kelland, who was a long-time family physician in central Newfoundland. Dr. Kelland believed that high quality end-of-life care should be available to everyone, and we are proud to have helped make his wish a reality.
