(Grand Falls-Windsor) Lionel Kelland Hospice announced today that it has received a donation of $25,000 from a company with operations throughout the province. The contribution is being made by family-owned Notre Dame Agencies in honour of Cluny Sheppard.
2022 marks 70 years of business for Notre Dame Agencies. When the company was acquired by Cluny Sheppard it began to expand throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Headquartered in Lewisporte, it now operates Notre Dame Castle Building Centres, Notre Dame Recreation, Notre Dame Home Furnishings, and a truss manufacturing plant. Since his passing in 2020, Cluny’s wife Golda and their four daughters manage all the business interests.
Spokesperson for the family, Lorna Sargent believes that everyone should have access to the right care, in the setting of their choice when the end of life is near. She said, “We understand the difficulties that families face when caring for a loved one in their last days. In making this contribution, we are honouring our Dad, who valued family above all else.”
Chair of the Every Moment Matters Campaign for Lionel Kelland Hospice, Shelley Woolfrey said the donation from Notre Dame Agencies will benefit many people whose loved ones will spend their last days in a peaceful and homelike environment. “This company’s generous gift to the Hospice will have a lasting impact, ensuring that compassionate care is available when it is needed and that family members will be supported.”
Located in Grand Falls-Windsor and currently under construction, Lionel Kelland Hospice is slated for completion in late spring of 2023. Hospice palliative care is a special kind of health care for those who are at the end of life, where the goal is to provide comfort and dignity, and the best quality of life possible. There are 100 hospices throughout Canada, but Lionel Kelland Hospice will be the first one for Newfoundland and Labrador.
In addition to the ten private resident suites, the 2430 metre building will have various spaces for use by residents and their family members. Through a multi-disciplinary team, medical care will be available for residents 24/7 and supports will be available to meet the emotional, cultural and spiritual needs of residents and their families.
