(Grand Falls-Windsor): Construction started this week on the province’s first Hospice. It’s a critical milestone for the Lionel Kelland Hospice group developing the community-based end of life care facility in Central Newfoundland.
The Presentation Centre in Grand Falls-Windsor has been re-designed to become a modern, fully- equipped, 2430 square metre residence designed to meet the care needs of people at the end of life. Targeting a completion date of Spring 2023, Lionel Kelland Hospice will offer compassionate care to people with advancing illness who can no longer be cared for at home. The building will feature 10 private resident suites and spaces that enable families to be supported as they journey with their loved ones during the last days and moments of life.
The construction of the Hospice is being carried out by Burnt Bay Construction Ltd. and the company will work closely with the designers, Fougere Menchenton Architecture.
In addition to broad support from individuals, organizations and businesses, Lionel Kelland Hospice is working with the Department of Health and Community Services and Central Health to ensure the province’s first hospice and the programs offered there meet the highest standards.
“The construction start is a huge milestone for everyone involved. It’s incredible to see the building work proceed and to know that very soon, people of our region will have access to community-based palliative care in a peaceful and supportive setting. What we are seeing in Lionel Kelland Hospice is the result of many people working together.”

Board Chair, Lionel Kelland Hospice
“Central Health is pleased to see the continued progress of the Lionel Kelland Hospice. Entering the construction phase of this project brings us one step closer to residents of Central Newfoundland having access to enhanced capacity for palliative care outside of the hospital setting. Central Health will continue a collaborative approach to end-of life care with the Lionel Kelland Hospice, and the Central Health End-of Life Care Teams, ensuring a Patient – and Family Centred-Care approach to care delivery.”
Andrée Robichaud
President and CEO, Central Health
“End of life care requires compassion and comfort that individuals need in their final days. Hospice Care focuses on attending to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients in a setting outside of the hospital environment. It is as important for families and loved ones, as it is for the individuals in care. I am very pleased construction is underway for the Lionel Kelland Hospice which will provide this new option for families in Central. I also want to thank the Lionel Kelland Hospice Board, Central Health and the businesses and individuals who have contributed to make this project a reality.”
