(Grand Falls-Windsor): Support for the Every Moment Matters Campaign of Lionel Kelland Hospice continues to grow. United Way Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing $40,000 to help build the province’s first residential hospice. Construction is underway on the community-based palliative care facility in Grand Falls-Windsor.
Chair of the Every Moment Matters campaign, Shelley Woolfrey welcomed the involvement of United Way Newfoundland and Labrador and said, “Through the generosity of community partner United Way, we are building a warm and inclusive place that gives people who are dying the medical care they need and the privacy to say goodbye.” Aiming for a mid-2023 opening, the hospice will feature 10 private resident suites and have spaces that enable families to gather and be supported as they journey with their loved ones during the last days and moments of life.
United Way of Newfoundland and Labrador works to advance the common good and create opportunities for a better life for everyone in our province. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our Community Fund grants are invested directly with charitable organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador whose work impacts the lives of thousands of people in our province. We are so pleased to support the Lionel Kelland Hospice and believe as they do that Every Moment Matters.” United Way Newfoundland and Labrador has to date invested over 7 million dollars in community groups throughout the province.
Although Lionel Kelland Hospice may be the first of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador, the hospice care model is not new. It is used extensively throughout the world and there are approximately 100 residential hospices in Canada.
The residential hospice model is recognized as a more appropriate care setting for people who are dying. While a medical team is available 24/7 to focus on the patient’s pain management and control of symptoms, other team members will ensure that the emotional, cultural, spiritual, practical and functional needs of all residents and their families are met. Care will extend out to family members to help them navigate through their loved one’s final journey and through their own grief. They will receive the support needed so they can spend those last days not as caregivers, but as loved ones.
