(Grand Falls-Windsor): The Every Moment Matters Campaign for Lionel Kelland Hospice announced a significant donation today. Brothers Dave and Roy Adams of Grand Falls-Windsor have demonstrated their support of community-based palliative care with a generous donation of $25,000 to the Hospice. Construction is underway on the 10-bed palliative care facility in Grand Falls-Windsor and it is scheduled to open in the spring of 2023.
The public fundraising campaign began about one year ago, but work to develop the hospice project has taken several years. The model of hospice care delivery is new to this province and as more people come to understand what hospice care actually is, the support grows. Shelley Woolfrey, who chairs the fundraising group, said that in a hospice, care of families is just as important as the compassionate care given to those who are dying. She said, “Roy and Dave Adams have shown true humanity with their gift being designated to support families who will be present in the final days of a loved one.”
As donors at the Family Level of the Every Moment Matters Campaign, the Adams brothers have an opportunity to name a space at the new facility and have chosen to name the children’s play area located just down the hall from the resident suites. Roy Adams said, “We feel that the playroom will be very important to families of small children during a challenging and emotional time.” His brother Dave added, “Little ones who are also vulnerable at these times will get to do what they need to do – simply play.”
The residential hospice model is recognized around the world as a more appropriate care setting for people who are dying. While a medical team focuses on symptom management and pain control, other team members will ensure that the emotional, cultural, spiritual and practical needs of all residents are met. Care will extend out to family members to help them navigate through their loved one’s final journey and through their own grief. They will receive the support needed so they can spend those last days not as caregivers, but as loved ones.
